Pas

Most travellers will need a passport to enter Slovakia. The passport must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure, have been issued within the last ten years and have two blank pages.

Nationals of the European Union (EU) can enter the Schengen area with a valid ID.

Visaer

Lokal rejse

Overview

Slovakia has an extensive public transport network that is reliable, inexpensive and safe. Petty crime does occur on public transport. Vehicular travel can be dangerous due to poor driving habits and variable road conditions; roads can be in poor condition in rural areas. Air travel is safe and there are regular domestic and international flights. Metered taxis operate in all major cities and towns.

Travel Safety

Air Travel

M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS/LZIB), located approximately nine kilometres (5.6 miles) northeast of central Bratislava, is Slovakia’s main airport. The airport offers flights from airlines such as Ryanair, Smartwings, Wizz Air and SkyAlps. Security at the airport is good and its facilities are modern. Most long-distance flights are available at major hubs in neighbouring countries.

There are several transport options to reach Bratislava from the airport. Bus no. 61 and 69 depart from outside the terminal building to the city centre and the journey takes around 25 minutes. From 23:00 to 04:00 local time nightly, bus no.61 operates a less frequent night service leaving once every hour. Taxis depart from outside the Arrival Halls. Always use taxis from the official rank, as unlicensed drivers may overcharge you. Bratislava Airport is also within a one-hour drive of Vienna, Austria. More information on transportation options from the airport can be found here.

Košice International Airport ( KSC/LZKZ) has regular links with Bratislava and limited international flights to six European cities: Prague, Warsaw, London, Vienna, Liverpool and Dublin. There is also a small airport in Poprad, Poprad-Tatry Airport (TAT/LZTT), in the central mountainous region of the High Tatras, which offers only limited international flights. The airport does not have bus services, but taxis are available from outside the terminal building after every landing. Car hire companies also have desks in the arrivals hall. Both airports have modern security procedures, but their small size means that security can be lax. Nevertheless, there have been no major security breaches in recent years.

Airspace

Following the European Union (EU) Commission announcement that all EU airspace will be closed to Russian-owned, Russian-registered and Russian-controlled aircraft, including private planes and for overflights, all flights to and from Russia will be banned until further notice, in line with EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Identification

Most travellers will need a passport to enter Slovakia. The passport must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure, have been issued within the last ten years and have two blank pages.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" may be denied entry. Contact the nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to confirm if entry is allowed with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral". The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in Slovakia might face legal and social difficulties.

Road Travel

Traffic moves on the right. The roads in Slovakia have improved dramatically in recent years, along with the accident rate. Major motorways generally have two or three well surfaced lanes. Slovak motorway toll tickets, known as 'dail'nicka nalepka', can be bought from any petrol station. Failure to display one may incur a heavy fine. Some rural roads are in a poor condition, mainly caused by poor maintenance and harsh winters.

The standard of driving can be poor as drivers do not respect traffic laws; instances of reckless overtaking and speeding are particularly common. Travellers are advised to drive defensively. In Bratislava and Kosice, travellers should also be wary of trams, as they often have the right of way at junctions. Unmarked level-crossings for railways are common in rural areas and extreme caution is advised if approaching one. Driving conditions may be hazardous during winter and winter tyres are required. Speed limits in Slovakia are 130kph (80 mph) on motorways, 90kph (56 mph) on other main roads and 60kph (37 mph) in villages and towns. Traffic police enforce these limits strictly using radar detection devices and those caught face fines and potential licence confiscation. However, Slovak drivers tend to flash their lights at other drivers to warn them of a police speed trap. Headlights must be kept on at all times between November and March annually.

Rail Travel

International rail routes go to Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Warsaw and points further east. The Bratislava Main Railway Station (Hlavná stanica) is the terminus for all international services. Rolling stock used on routes from the east can be much older than that used on routes from the north and west. Petty crime can occur in carriages, so it is important to keep your bags close to you. The rail system has its own railway police who are present at the main stations and on intercity trains.

The domestic Slovak rail network is gradually being updated. Services are among the least expensive in Europe and are generally safe but vary in quality. Intercity routes are the most efficient, with trains on these routes being modern and comfortable. The main intercity route runs from Bratislava to Kosice, via Poprad and other central Slovak towns. Tickets for intercity routes should be bought at least a couple of hours in advance. Rail infrastructure in the east of Slovakia is the least developed and trains are old and slow. For instance, trains from Kosice to Humenne near the border with Ukraine stop at Banovce nad Bebravou for half an hour to change from an electric to a diesel engine. If travelling in the east of the country, buses tend to be quicker than trains. Many stations across the country are in need of serious renovation. Many stations make departure announcements in English and German as well as Slovak.

Public Transport

Ferries and Boats: International ferry services link Bratislava to Vienna, Visegrad and Budapest, from spring to autumn. The vessels used are modern with good safety records; no major incidents have taken place in recent years.

Pleasure vessels can also be booked for sightseeing tours along the Danube River. A popular Bratislava-Devin route exists from April to September, and tickets are generally inexpensive.

Buses: International bus services run from Bratislava and Kosice to cities across Europe. Some travellers enter Slovakia by bus after landing at Vienna Airport, using a direct service from outside the Vienna terminal building to Bratislava. Most international bus lines go to the Bratislava Central Bus Station (Mlynské nivy), which is located on the outskirts of the city. The vehicles used for international bus services are modern and comfortable, though those on routes to Eastern Europe and Russia may be slightly older. There have been no serious bus accidents involving international bus services in Slovakia. Petty crime can be a problem, as thieves target sleeping passengers. Ensure you keep bags close to you and use locks if available.

Domestic long-distance buses are a safe and inexpensive travel option but can be very slow to reach their destinations. Older buses are in service on domestic routes; however, no major accidents have been reported in recent years. Most towns are connected to Bratislava by regular bus services. Tickets can be bought from offices at bus stations or from the driver. Timetables are printed on large boards on the walls of bus stations. It is important to examine these carefully, as some services only run on certain days, whilst others may be temporarily suspended. In cities, bus networks are usually extensive and reliable. However, vehicles can be uncomfortable and ageing. Tickets must be bought from ticket machines on the street or bus stations before boarding. Once on the bus you are required to stamp the ticket to validate it.

Taxis: Taxis in Slovakia are reliable and inexpensive. It is not possible to hail a cab on the street, as all taxis must be registered with a company and called directly by telephone. The exceptions are taxis that wait in official ranks in central urban areas and outside the main bus and train stations. However, prices for these taxis can be higher and all taxi prices are higher after dark. Prices for longer journeys must be negotiated. Occasionally, a company will charge a small baggage fee. Most taxi drivers in Bratislava speak some English or German, but outside Bratislava, only Slovak is spoken. Tips are not expected but are appreciated if given. Unlicensed taxi drivers may offer you a ride in busy urban areas. Licensed taxis can be identified as they have illuminated rooftop 'TAXI' lights and/or a taxi company branding on the side of the vehicle. You should never accept offers from unlicensed drivers, as they regularly overcharge foreign nationals. Incidences of bag theft by unlicensed drivers have also been reported.

Several ride-sharing apps are available and are overall safe to use in Bratislava, such as Uber, Hopin, Lyftago and Bolt.

Trams: Trams operate alongside buses in Bratislava and use the same ticketing system. They tend to be very safe, with no serious accidents occurring in recent years.

Vehicle Hire: Renting cars is less expensive in Slovakia than in many other European countries. There are plenty of hire companies to choose from, with many occupying offices at Bratislava Airport. As well as international rental firms, some good and reliable local companies exist which can offer cars with all modern fittings and complimentary drop-off at Bratislava hotels. Most vehicles for hire are modern and well-maintained. Always inspect any vehicle you wish to hire before you leave the hire company offices, as damage can be missed by company inspections.
