Prior medical approval

– What is it and how should you proceed?

As a starting point, our insurances only cover damages in connection with acute illness and serious injury. In the event that you are ill or if you have become injured before a trip – or should you have any reason to believe that you will need a doctor or other treatment provider abroad – you should apply for a prior medical approval.

A prior medical approval tells you how you are covered by your insurance with Europæiske ERV in relation to a chronic or existing condition for example.

How should you proceed?

In connection with a trip, you should be aware that it is necessary to apply for a prior medical approval with Europæiske ERV if you have a chronic or existing illness which has not been stable for 2 months up to departure.

In addition, you must apply in the event of new medical conditions, serious chronic conditions, complicated pregnancies and if you have visited a doctor or other treatment provider outside of normal check–ups – even if a diagnosis has not been made. This shall apply irrespective of the destination and duration of the trip.

Important information

You must be aware that the insurance – in accordance with the applicable conditions – is only valid after you have received approval from Europæiske ERV.

In the event that your state of health changes before departure in such a way, for example, that a hospital stay, acute doctor visit or changed medication is necessary, you must contact us so that we can assess whether a new prior medical approval is necessary.

You must also be aware that a prior medical approval only applies for the trip in question. Therefore, on your next trip you must consider once again whether you should apply for a prior medical approval.

How to apply for a prior medical approval

You apply for a prior medical approval by completing and submitting a health declaration.

Fill out the health declaration electronically, print it out and sign it, scan it and then send it by e–mail to: helbred@erv.dk – this is free. Fill out health declaration >

Expatriation

If you have an expatriation insurance you need to fill out the form electronically, print it and sign it. Then you need to scan it and send it by e-mail to helbred@erv.dk - this is also free. Fill out health declaration >

How long before a trip can you apply for a prior medical approval?

You can apply for a prior medical approval at the earliest 6 months before departure and no later than 14 days before departure in order to receive an answer as to how you are covered by your insurance when you have a chronic or existing condition.

In relation to approval for coverage on a cancellation insurance, it is important that you apply for a prior medical approval before you book a trip to be sure that you are covered for cancellation in the event that your condition worsens.

Our response time is 3 business days.

Can you expect full coverage, if you apply for a prior medical approval?

When you apply for a prior medical approval, your insurance does not automatically cover expenditure which can be related to your chronic or existing condition. As a starting point, our assessment will be one of the following:

  • Approved - which means that you will be covered as usual according to our insurance conditions if your chronic or existing condition should require treatment during the trip.
  • Approved - with reservations, which means that you will be covered for reasonable expenditure for acute illness/injury, which may not be related to our reservations.
  • Rejected - which means that you will not be covered by insurance from Europæiske ERV in connection with your trip.

Purchase of insurance

You should be aware that an approved prior medical approval does not constitute a travel insurance.
