Overview
The Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID/GVAC) on the island of Sal is Cabo Verde's main international airport. Air travel remains the best option for reaching the more distant Cabo Verde islands, but ferries are also available. Taxis, minibuses and rented vehicles are the best alternatives for travelling within the islands.
Travel Safety
Air Travel
Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID/GVAC), also known as Sal International Airport on the island of Sal, is the main international airport of Cabo Verde. Sal Airport is also the main hub for Cabo Verde’s national airline, Cabo Verde Airlines, which operates many domestic flights. The airport complies with international safety regulations, and its facilities are modern and comfortable. Nelson Mandela (Praia) International Airport (RAI/GVNP) on Santiago Island and Aristides Pereira International Airport (BVC/GVBA) on Boa Vista Island also offer multiple flight connections to major European and African cities.
Borders and Entry
Health-related surveillance measures:
- Authorities implemented Ebola surveillance measures at the country’s entry points, effective until further notice, to prevent the entry of the disease.
- Authorities implemented mpox-related surveillance measures at the country’s entry points until further notice to prevent the spread of the virus.
Identification
Most travellers will need a passport to enter Cabo Verde. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of departure.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" may be denied entry. Contact the nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to confirm if entry is allowed with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral". The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in Cabo Verde might face legal and social difficulties.
Required Documents
Entry requirement: Travellers must submit a completed Traveller Entry Form at least five days before departure and pay an Airport Security fee (TSA) upon arrival. Document link: https://registration.cv.zetes.com/(S(c0dp5ctej22vudaifffhzidv))/Pages/CapeVerde/PersonalInfo.aspx
Road Travel
Traffic moves on the right in Cabo Verde. The speed limit is 30kph (18mph) in urban areas and 80kph (50mph) on highways. The legal threshold for driving under the influence of alcohol is 0.8 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood. Most roads on the islands of Santiago, Sal and São Vicente are asphalted and in good condition, while on the islands of Fogo, Brava, Maio, São Nicolau and Boa Vista, most roads are still paved with cobblestone, narrow and winding. Travellers are recommended to hire a 4WD vehicle. Drivers should exercise caution when driving after dark as streets in rural areas are often unlit, with pedestrians and livestock presenting an additional hazard.
Rail Travel
There is no rail transport in Cabo Verde.
Public Transport
Travel between Cabo Verde's islands is possible by plane and ferry. City buses are available in the larger cities, while minibuses operate between cities. Taxis are widely available.
Ferries and Boats: There are regular passenger transport services between the islands of Cabo Verde. CV InterIlhas operates all routes with a fleet of four ferries. Tickets can be purchased online at the CV InterIlhas website. However, in some cases flying is more convenient as the distance between some islands is very large.
Buses: Larger cities, such as Praia on the island of Santiago and Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, have a limited number of bus routes.
Taxis: Taxis are available all over the island, especially in the larger cities. Travellers are advised to negotiate the fare before setting off, as not all taxis are metered.
Vehicle Hire: There are several international and local car rental companies on the main islands of Santiago, São Vicente, Sal, Boa Vista and Santo Antão.
Minibuses: Shared minibuses or ‘Aluguer’ can be hailed along the roads. They usually leave when full and can be stopped between towns. They are a cheap but often crowded means of transport.
