Overview
Overland travel in Honduras can often be difficult and dangerous, with most roads not well-paved nor maintained outside major cities and conditions becoming worse during the rainy season. Public transport is unsafe due to poorly maintained vehicles and roads as well as the risk of pickpocketing. Opt for radio-dispatched taxis for city travel and for hiring a private driver and vehicle from a reputable company or taking a tourist bus for intercity travel.
Travel Safety
Air Travel
There are five international airports serving Honduras. Toncontín International Airport (TGU/MHTG) services the capital of Tegucigalpa and lies six kilometres (3.7 miles) outside of the city center. Comayagua International Airport (XPL/MHPR), or Palmerola International Airport, is a new international airport located six kilometres (four miles) south of the centre of Comayagua and some 70km northwest of Tegucigalpa. Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP/MHLM) services San Pedro Sula, the country's industrial capital, which lies near the border of Guatemala. Golosón International Airport (LCE/MHLC) services La Ceiba, a port city on the Caribbean coast. Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB/MHRO) services the island of Roatán in the Bay Islands. Air pollution can lead to the closure of some or all of the country's airports during the dry season.
Purse snatching and pickpocketing are common at airports in Honduras. Be sure to lock your luggage, keep your valuables close to you, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Travellers are often targeted when leaving the airports. There are many reports of assaults on vehicles coming from the airport. It has been suggested that informants in airport arrival areas tip criminals waiting for recently-arrived travellers. It is important to refrain from openly discussing your travel plans at the airport.
Borders and Entry
Health-related surveillance measures:
- Authorities implemented Ebola surveillance measures at the country’s entry points, effective until further notice, to prevent the entry of the disease.
Identification
Most travellers will need a passport to enter Honduras. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the date of departure and have one blank page.
Travellers with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral" may be denied entry. Contact the nearest embassy, high commission or consulate to confirm if entry is allowed with passports where gender is indicated as "neutral". The country's laws on LGBTQ people are conservative, and overall social acceptance is low. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer travellers in Honduras might face legal and social difficulties.
Road Travel
Vehicles in Honduras drive on the right. During the rainy season, travel is limited to major routes between cities as road conditions elsewhere deteriorate considerably. Most roads outside of the major cities are not well-paved. Most roads throughout the country, including highways, are poorly lit and not well marked. Rockslides and flooding are common during the rainy season (June to November) and some roads and highways will be shut down during heavy rains.
Carjackings and robberies occur along Honduran highways, roads, and busy city intersections. Vehicles heading to and from the airport are sometimes targeted by criminals. Be cautious when sitting in busy intersections or at traffic lights. It is essential to lock all doors and close all windows.
Public Transport
Using public transport is unsafe due to poorly maintained vehicles and roads. Pickpocketing is common on public transport.
Buses: Petty crime is common on public buses. Pickpocketing at bus terminals is also common, as with all crowded public places. You should only travel during the day by bus. Using first-class bus service is best for safety. City buses should be avoided as they have been attacked by armed mara groups and are subject to regular extortion in some suburban communities. Criminals have been known to take entire buses of passengers hostage for a short period of time, commonly referred to as express kidnapping, and made to pay an indeterminate amount of cash or have their valuables taken for their release. Buses travelling in the metropolitan area of Tegucigalpa have been forcibly diverted from their routes and passengers robbed at gunpoint.
Bus accidents are also frequent and are typically caused by erratic driving standards and mechanical failure.
Taxis: Regular street taxis should be avoided due to possible links with express kidnapping groups or other criminals. If you do take a taxi, exercise extreme caution. When hailing a taxi, note the driver's name and license number. Always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle. Keep small bills or exact change on you, as most drivers do not carry change. It is important to instruct the driver not to pick up additional passengers when you are riding in the vehicle. While in major cities, consider using a professional driver from a trusted company. Radio taxis and ride-hailing services are also an option.
Vehicle Hire: Roadblocks set up by amateur criminals in rural areas target rental cars. Consider using tourist buses or private drivers from trusted companies for inter-city travel.
